32-Bit Float Field Recorders

32-bit float is somewhat of a modern marvel in the field recording world.

Due to the extreme dynamic range captured by 32-bit float, both below and above 0 dBFS, you do not have to set the gain level.

32-bit float recordings will never experience clipping and no noise is added to the signal when adding gain during post production.

Zoom F3

The Zoom F3 packs the power of 32-bit float in an extremely small package.

Measuring just 3 x 1.9 x 3" the F3 is one of the smallest field recorders ever manufactured.

The Zoom F3 is able to achieve this size due to its limited features. No filters, no effects, and no support for PiP. Just x2 XLR inputs, a headphone jack, a USB-C port, sample rate and bit depth settings, and ultra quiet preamplifiers with only -127 dBu of noise.

Recommendation: The Zoom F3 offers incredible value for its affordable price if you only require 2 audio channels. The USB-C port makes for convenient powering via a USB power supply for many hours. I’ve recorded for over 40 hours without depleting a 26,800mAh power supply.

Zoom F6

The Zoom F6 offers 32-bit float for up to 6 microphone inputs as well as professional features including timecode I/O.

The F6 is also very compact and supports ambisonic recordings without any additional plugins.

It also has integrated pins at the back for accepting L-series batteries without the need for a battery sled or additional accessories. It can also be easily powered via a USB power supply via its built in USB-C port.

Recommendation: The Zoom F6 is an affordable option for 32-bit float production sound or those interested in ambisonic recordings.

Sound Devices MixPre II Series

Released in 2019, the MixPre II Series from Sound Devices features ultra quiet preamps (-128dBu), 32-bit float, and compact design.

Each MixPre II recorder can be easily powered for long periods via external USB power supplies thanks to their internal USB-C ports.

All MixPre II recorders have timecode I/O, and will hold accurate timecode for up to 4 hours after powering down.

Three configurations are available:

  • 3 channels (MixPre 3 II)

  • 6 channels (MixPre 6 II)

  • 10 channels (MixPre 10 II)

The MixPre 6 & 10 offer support for ambisonic recordings (with plugin).

Recommendation: The MixPre II Series are capable and convenient with todays standards. 32-bit float can be a life saver and timesaver since you don’t have to worry about levels. The preamps are the quietest available, making them a good option for recording quiet sounds like nature ambiences.
