Geophones

Geophones are designed to pick up seismic vibrations below ground.

Historically, geophones have been used in researching the properties of the Earth’s subsurface and seismic surveys. They’ve also been used to help detect leaks in underground pipes.

Geophones have only recently been adapted for field recording use.

LOM Geofón

In 2018, LOM released the first geophone modified for field recording purposes. At present, they are still the only manufacturer of such.

The LOM geophone includes several mounting accessories including:

  • Stainless Steel Spike - for stabbing into soil and other substrates

  • Neodymium Magnet - for attaching to steel

  • Suction Cup - for adhering to any smooth surface

Similar to contact microphones, geophones are only sensitive to sounds traveling through solid objects. As such, when using the magnet or suction cup with the LOM geophone, it functions as a contact mic to capture vibrations in various materials.

Unfortunately, due to high demand and low supply, the LOM geophone is often out of stock.
